R-454B, R-32 and R-410A heat pumps in the certified list
R-454B is now the most common refrigerant among rated products: 1,150 of 2,613, against 830 on R-410A and 633 on R-32. The newer refrigerants also list higher seasonal heating ratings: the median HSPF2 of R-32 split systems is 9.35, of R-454B 9 and of R-410A 8.5.
Three refrigerants in one list
Every listing in the ENERGY STAR data names its refrigerant and, in a separate field, the refrigerant with its global warming potential as published: R-454B (GWP:470 | Lower GWP), R-32 (GWP:675 | Lower GWP) and R-410A (GWP:2088). This site shows that label exactly as EPA lists it and does not add its own rating to it. The three refrigerants cover all 2,613 rated products; no other appears in the file.
| Refrigerant | Rated products | Split systems | Mini- and multi-splits | Single-package | Median HSPF2, split | Median HSPF2, mini | Median first on market |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| R-454B | 1,150 | 575 | 540 | 35 | 9 | 10.45 | 2024-11 |
| R-32 | 633 | 108 | 504 | 21 | 9.35 | 10 | 2025-02 |
| R-410A | 830 | 253 | 560 | 17 | 8.5 | 10 | 2022-11 |
A change visible in the dates
The market dates in the list show the order in which the refrigerants arrived. Half of the R-410A products were first on the market by 2022-11, half of the R-454B products by 2024-11 and half of the R-32 products by 2025-02. R-454B has become the most common choice among split systems, with 575 of 936. Among mini- and multi-splits the three are close: 560 on R-410A, 540 on R-454B and 504 on R-32.
Refrigerant by size class
R-454B leads every split-system class. Its share is highest in the 5-ton class (68%) and lowest in the 3.5-ton class (58%). Among mini- and multi-splits the picture is mixed: R-410A is the most common refrigerant in 4 of the 12 size classes, R-32 in 3 and R-454B in 5. The smallest mini-split class, 6,000 Btu/h, lists no R-32 product at all.
Line-ups
Of the 124 brand groups with at least 15 rated products, 31 still list R-410A for half or more of their products, and 8 list nothing else. Each line-up page gives the count per refrigerant, so a group's mix can be read at a glance.
The same order shows in recent listings. Of the R-32 products, 55% were first on the market in 2025 or later; of the R-454B products 41%, and of the R-410A products 5%. R-410A products are still certified, though: half of them have a certification date of 2026-06 or later.
Ratings by refrigerant
Among split systems the median HSPF2 rises from 8.5 on R-410A to 9 on R-454B and 9.35 on R-32. Among mini- and multi-splits the medians are closer: 10, 10.45 and 10. The share with the EPA cold-climate designation is 85% for R-32 products, 77% for R-454B and 66% for R-410A.
The cold-weather figures are much closer. The median share of 47°F capacity kept at 5°F is 80% for R-32 products, 79% for R-454B and 77% for R-410A, and the median COP at 5°F is 2.00 for all three. On these two measures the refrigerant says little about a product; the size class and the compressor type say more, as the staging explainer shows.
Single-package units follow the split-system pattern: 35 of the 73 are on R-454B, 21 on R-32 and 17 on R-410A.
These are differences between groups of products, not effects of the refrigerant alone. The newer refrigerants arrived with newer product lines, and newer lines also differ in compressor type and size mix. The data cannot separate those influences, and this page does not try to.
What the list does not cover
The ENERGY STAR file says nothing about rules for installing, servicing or replacing equipment with any refrigerant, and this site gives no advice on them. It does not cover refrigerant charge, line sets or compatibility between old and new equipment. The figures here only show which refrigerant each certified product lists and how the ratings of each group compare.
Finding products by refrigerant
The cold finder has a refrigerant filter under its additional filters, so any size class can be narrowed to R-454B, R-32 or R-410A products. Product pages give the refrigerant and its published GWP label in the first line, and the line-up pages count each brand group's products by refrigerant. When few products in a size class share a refrigerant, the product page says so in its opening facts: among the 38 rated 3.5-ton split systems, only 3 are on R-32.
Counts refer to the list certified as of October 27, 2026; the share on each refrigerant moves as new products are certified.
